Vinata Vedam-Mai, MSc, PhD, received her master’s degree from the University of Bangalore, India and her doctorate degree from the University of Georgia, Athens, GA in 2004. After working in the University of MD, Medical School, Baltimore MD for a couple of years, she joined the Neural Stem Cell laboratory of Dr. Brent Reynolds as a postdoctoral associate. In addition, she works with Dr. Michael Okun (Neurology) as part of the Movement Disorders and Restoration team on several clinical projects relating to Parkinson’s disease and other movement disorders.
Dr. Vedam-Mai’s research focuses on the study of the effect of electrical stimulation (such as DBS) on the neurogenic niches of the brain, and ultimately to try and comprehend the mode of action of this surgical procedure at the cellular level. She is also interested in cancer stem cell biology and therapeutics useful for cancer treatment.
Dr. Vedam-Mai is also the central tissue research co-ordinator for the UF DBS Brain Tissue Network, as well as the ANS DBS Brain Bank.
