Pediatric ER - Shands Hospital For Children

The new Shands Hospital for Children at the University of Florida Pediatric Emergency Room will open in July.

How will we improve care for our kids?

A new entrance will welcome children and their families with a fun and colorful look. Inside, a newly renovated kid-friendly space will allow for more streamlined pediatric care. The Pediatric ER will offer:

  • 13 private treatment rooms and five observation bays
  • Two waiting rooms -- one for sick children and one for well children
  • Two exam rooms, specifically designed for children with communicable diseases
  • Nurse stations with the most technologically advanced equipment specifically designed to treat children and young adults

Why move our pediatric ER?

Our current pediatric emergency services share space in the Shands Critical Care Center, which offers emergency and trauma services. To enhance pediatric care and make better use of existing resources, we are building the Pediatric ER at Shands at UF, in the space where the former ER was located on the north campus. This will allow us to consolidate pediatric care in the same building.

More than 12,000 pediatric emergency patients were treated at Shands at UF Emergency Room in 2010.

By co-locating the UF and Shands pediatric teams in a child-focused environment, we will better serve our young patients and their families.

David W. Pincus, MD

>David W. Pincus, MD, PhD, is the Chief of Pediatric Neurosurgery. He grew up in Massachusetts where he attended high school at Deerfield Academy. After graduating from Yale College with a B.S. degree in biology, Dr. Pincus obtained M.D. and Ph.D. degrees from Cornell University. His Ph.D. thesis work focused on the development of precursor cells (stem cells) in the nervous system. He then pursued a neurosurgical residency at the Neurological Institute of New York at Columbia-Presbyterian Medical Center. During his residency training he continued his work with neuronal precursor cells, now with human brain samples, and received the Congress of Neurological Surgeons' Resident Award in 1996.

After completing his chief residency at Columbia, Dr. Pincus served as a pediatric neurosurgical fellow at Children's National Medical Center in Washington, DC. He then accepted a position as an attending at Children's where he remained for one year prior to being asked to join the Department of Neurological Surgery at the University of Florida. As the primary pediatric neurosurgeon at the University of Florida, Dr. Pincus takes care of all neurosurgical problems in children.

Dr. Pincus is board certified by both the American Board of Neurological Surgeons and the American Board of Pediatric Neurosurgeons and is a member of the American Society of Pediatric Neurosurgeons. He cares for patients from birth through 21 years of age.
